We’ve all heard their names and seen their clothes, but do we know their stories? Here is a window in to the lives of four great male fashion designers.
British fashion Designer, Lee Alexander McQueen died this past February at the young age of forty. Known for his unconventional designs, McQueen founded his own fashion line after working for five years as the head designer of Givenchy. McQueen grew up in a council flat in Lewisham, London where he lived with his parents and five siblings. At age sixteen he dropped out of school and to take an apprenticeship at Savile Row. Tragically, McQueen took his own life. He was a depressed and anxious person despite his incredible talent.
Calvin Richard Klein was born in the Bronx to Jewish-Hungarian parents. He attended the High School of Art and Design as well as New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. He apprenticed and designed for many New York shops. In 1968 he launched his first company. Calvin Klein was one of many designers who grew up in a Jewish immigrant community in the Bronx- Ralph Lauren was another. After showing his line of jeans, Calvin Klein was immediately recognized for his talent amongst the most elite designers.
Lacroix was born in southern France, in Arles, Bouche-du-Rhone. He was a very well educated man. He studied Art History at the University of Monpellier, and then in 1971 enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris. Lacroix had aspired to be a museum curator and so went to complete a program in museum studies at the Ecole du Louvre. From a young age, Christian Lacroix was interested in fashion. He used to sketch historical costumes and fashions as a child. In the mid-seventies he met fashion press attaché Jean-Jacques Picart, who got Lacroix a job at Hermès. In 1987 he opened his own couture house and began creating ready-to-wear pieces inspired from diverse cultures.
Giorgio Armani is an Italian designer known for his men’s wear, and clean, tailored lines. His fashion career began with a job working as a window dresser at La Rinascente, a department store in Milan. He then became a buyer for the store’s men’s department which offered tremendous insight into the marketing aspect of the fashion industry. Giorgio Armani was an innovative man, an industry leader in many, many ways. He was the first designer to ban models with a BMI under 18 after a famous model starved herself to death. He was also the first haute-couture designer to broadcast his collection on the internet in 2007. Armani is an inspiring and legendary man in the fashion industry.
