Winter is a time when many of us let ourselves go a bit, enjoying the festive food and drinking a little more than usual. There is nothing wrong with having a good time of course but if you are planning to fly off somewhere hot later in the year and would like to ensure that you look fabulous when you hit the beach or take a plunge in the hotel swimming pool, the following five tips could help you to achieve your goal.

Start calorie counting – I can almost hear the groans as you read this first point but if you have tried to diet in the past and been disappointed with the results, you may well find that things are much easier when you keep a close eye on your calorific intake. Whilst it is a pain to work out how many calories are in everything you eat at first, if you stick to a fairly simple plan you will soon be able to calculate exactly how many calories you are consuming without resorting to a reference book every time you fancy a bite to eat. One of the biggest benefits of counting the calories that you consume is that it makes you think twice before scoffing a cream cake or ordering an extra helping of chips.


Exercise on a regular basis – the groans continue and some of you may be about to hit the back button and search for a plan that promises you miracles with little to no effort required on your part. Unfortunately, such promises always turn out to be untrue so do yourself a big favour and invest in some basic gym equipment that you can use at home whenever you have some spare time. As little as 30 minutes aerobic exercise every day could really help you to start shedding the pounds. Some light resistance training to tone your muscles will be beneficial as well and in addition to ensuring that your body looks firm in time for summer, will help you to burn more calories even after you have finished your workout.

Drink plenty of water – whilst there is no need to go mad and drown yourself in the stuff, a litre or two of water a day will help your liver to rid your body of the fat that you burn during exercise. If you are not sure how much water to drink, the easiest way is to keep an eye on your urine when you go to the bathroom. If it is a very light yellow or completely clear, then everything is fine. On the other hand, if it becomes darker, you should drink more water as you are becoming dehydrated. A bit of a yucky tip I know, but it is the easiest way to regulate your water intake.

Go shopping – things are starting to look up now! However, before you get too carried away, your first shopping expedition should be spent investigating the range of gym equipment available in your part of the world. Many people find it easier to shop online for fitness accessories so this is something that you can do in the comfort of your own home if you wish.

Go shopping again– this time the focus is firmly on fun, although the outfits that you buy will hopefully help to ensure that your motivation to get in shape remains high until you have achieved all your goals. Buy whatever you like but be sure to choose a couple of revealing outfits that are just a little too tight right now. If you want to wear them on holiday, keep up the good work!
