The Rebirth is the third studio release from R&B singer Bobby Valentino. The name refers to the creation of his record company Blu Kolla Dreams through EMI, and his departure from Ludacris’ Disturbing Tha Peace/Def Jam label where he was the first R&B artist signed in 2003.
Bobby Valentino, or Bobby V as he is often called, is known as the smooth romantic, with a touch of R. Kelly bedroom-sultriness. His sound is unmistakable. His unique voice and style is unlikely to be confused with anyone else. Valentino is probably best known for his singles Turn The Page, a lyrically beautiful ballad the ladies tend to be fond of, and the club hit Anonymous featuring one of the most famous urban music producers of all time, Timbaland. Material on The Rebirth might not top these two tracks, but there is definitely some noteworthy stuff on offer.
The lead single is Beep, and features Yung Joc. It is an upbeat, catchy tune in distinctive Bobby V style and one of the better numbers on the album. There are of course the obligatory love songs to please the romantics out there, for instance Make You The Only One, My Girl and Just Me And You.
Stand out songs include Hands On Me, On The Edge, You’re Not Alone and Be My Love which has a Musiq Souldchild feel about it. The Rebirth also marks Valentino’s production debut with Make You Say, a track inspired by the hook he wrote and sings on Lil Wayne’s Mrs. Officer.
These days there aren’t many solo R&B artists who maintain the feel of old school slow jams and can still hold their own with more upbeat club-type tracks, but Bobby V manages just fine. The Rebirth doesn’t feel as if he is ‘re-born’ exactly, however it’s a solid album featuring smooth chilled grooves which always maintains his unwavering voice and style. The album leaves the impression Valentino isn’t going anywhere and with the fresh establishment of his record label, it’s likely there will be much more to see from Mr. Bobby V.
