Quick: What colors are in your closet? If you’re like many people, you’ll find that you’re naturally drawn toward a few shades. That’s OK, as long as those are colors that work with your skin tone and make you look good. But you should also make sure that you have a bit of variety in there. You don’t want to be known as the person who only wears one color!
So here’s a gut check: You need the following colors in your closet. Until you can go from little black dress to yellow fall dress without having to run to the mall, your wardrobe will always be a shade shy of perfect.
Perhaps no color is as important to have in your closet as black. Black is the most versatile of all fashion colors. It can be formal or casual, sexy or classy (or both!). There’s a reason that black is the first color most people think of for everything from evening dresses to sexy club outfits.
If you don’t already have a little black dress, a few black basics for work, a black T, and a pair or two of black pants, then you need to go shopping. But you probably do — so let’s move on to some of the less obvious candidates.
OK, so this one isn’t that much less obvious. But if you work for a living and occasionally need to look presentable, you had better have some navy blue basics. Grab a blazer or a sweater in navy blue (or, better yet, both). Navy blue is great for work clothes and formal stuff, because it lets you dress dark without looking like you’re an FBI agent or on your way to a funeral.
Red is a bold color, but it’s one that should be in your arsenal. Men like red: Some surveys have shown that it’s the color men like best on women. Red should be confident and sexy, so don’t dial it back too much. A bold and primary red should definitely be in your date-dress rotation. And you can explore a lot of other shades of red. Burgundies and other deep and dark reds are great colors to turn to as the weather gets colder and the season changes to fall and then winter.
The legendary little black dress has long overshadowed other basic colors, including white. In fact, white has had it especially rough. It is subject to silly rules, like the idea that it shouldn’t be worn after Labor Day (not true!), as well as good ones, like the idea that you should not wear white to someone else’s wedding (very true!).
The underused white dress is a fashion must-have. It’s cute, classy, and perfect for summer. And if you think white can’t be sexy, take up this challenge: Get a little white dress and see how much you stand out at the club. White doesn’t have to be your go-to, but knowing how to use this color can take your fashion game to the next level.
The best color for your skin tone
Some people simply look better in certain colors than others do. And just like everyone else, you have a color that looks better on you than it does on the rest of humanity. All you have to do is find it.
Check out seasonal color analysis or use another technique to narrow down your options, and then hit the mall or go shopping online. Try on different colors. Buy things and return them. Heck, you can even hold up paint chips next to your face or use photoshop to test out different looks.
When you find your color, invest in it. This will be your go-to, that color that you pull out when you really need to impress. And it’s different for everyone, so start looking!
