Laser Hair Removal Before & After Tips

If you’re considering laser hair removal, just as important as scheduling the treatment is preparing for what to expect before and after.

By taking proper steps prior to the treatment, you will ensure the best possible results. Meanwhile, paying attention to the proper aftercare both after and between treatments will help maintain those results.

Take note of these laser hair removal before and after tips to plan for your laser hair removal treatment.

Before Laser Hair Removal

It’s important to take good care of the skin in the area you’re getting treated with laser hair removal prior to the treatment.

Before laser hair removal, follow these tips to make sure your treatment goes smoothly.

Limit Sun Exposure

You should consider taking extra special care of your skin at all times, but you should be especially careful a few weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. While sunscreen is always important, you should make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen before laser hair removal.

In fact, if you have any visible tan lines or have had recent sun exposure, you should consider rescheduling your treatment to a later date. Once the tan has subsided, feel free to schedule your treatment!

Shave Hair

Though it might sound counterintuitive, you should make sure to remove all hair on the surface of the area being treated the day before or day of your laser hair removal treatment. During the procedure, laser energy converts into heat energy, so removing the hair reduces any risk from it burning and damaging your skin during the procedure.

However, shaving is the preferred method for removing the surface hair, as both plucking and waxing can reduce the effectiveness of the laser treatment. If you’ve recently waxed or plucked the hair in your treatment area, you should wait at least a week before having the treatment.

If you’d like to bleach your hair prior to the laser treatment, you may, since bleach only changes the hair color on the surface of the skin and not the pigment of the follicle.

Keep the Area Clean

The day of the laser hair removal treatment, make sure your skin is clean and free of all lotions, creams, deodorant, and makeup. This includes any artificial tanner you may have on your skin.

After Laser Hair Removal

One of the greatest aspects of laser hair removal is that there is absolutely no downtime. You will be able to return to normal activities immediately after the treatment.

Address Any Redness/Swelling

Any redness you experience should disappear in minutes after laser hair removal. However, in some rare cases, you might experience redness for up to two days post-treatment.

If you do experience any redness or swelling, apply ice to the treatment area. In some cases, a topical cream or gel could also help. Make sure to ask your provider if you need any assistance with your aftercare.

Prepare for Multiple Sessions

Since hair growth happens in stages, you cannot reduce all the hair in your treated area in just one treatment. Though some patients see great results from the first treatment, they usually experience some regrowth. The laser damages the hair follicle, which is the source of hair growth, but it cannot damage every hair follicle in just one treatment.

Because of the hair growth cycle, though results vary from person to person, most patients require six to nine treatments to get a 75% to 90% hair reduction in the treated area. Keep in mind, laser hair removal does not result in permanent hair reduction, although the reduction will be significant.

You can usually expect to see your results in about two to three weeks after each treatment. You should wait at least six weeks before receiving the next treatment but waiting longer will not negatively affect the overall results. Most laser hair removal providers will offer a special pricing if you purchase multiple treatments at once.

More Questions?

If you have any other laser hair removal questions, make sure to ask your laser hair removal provider. Also, be sure you find an experienced professional for your laser hair removal to ensure the best possible results.
