Color blocking refers to painting the walls in a room in a series of block shapes rather than decorating the walls with artwork. By painting at least three varied sizes of blocks on a wall, and in many colors, you can achieve a fashion statement in your home decorating efforts.
Color blocking is a fantastic method for showing your creativity, plus this type of decorating is guaranteed to save you money, considering that you won’t need artwork, photos, or pictures to cover your walls.
The idea is to draw blocks in varied dimensions and sizes; you can accomplish this by drawing squares and rectangles. It’s best when you map out the sizes and shapes on a sheet of paper before you actually begin painting the walls. You will want to create a geometric balance, both in the positioning of the squares and rectangles and the color scheme that you’ll choose. Once you have everything drawn out on a sheet of paper, then you’re ready to start painting.
The easiest way to choose colors is to get some colored paint swatches from the hardware store or a home building store. You can use colors within the same family, such as various colors of blue for a bedroom, or you can get adventurous and just paint the blocks any color that suits your fancy and that will achieve the look you want to have in the room.
When you select varying colors by their intensity, it will give the room a monochromatic look that’s also complex. If you want colors that are more subtle, then choose colors according to a color card, where the colors are right next to each other.
To add more excitement to the blocks on the wall, you can choose an accent color that is not in the same color family as the other painting blocks. For example, you could choose various shades of yellow, and then your accent color could be brown, green, or bright orange.
For a more severe look to the room, you can paint the blocks in either black or white, which should look pretty dramatic and methodical.
To create a room with playfulness to it, and that looks like fun, you can choose colors that are opposite of each other on a color wheel, such as purple and yellow.
Remember that when you select colors that are within the same color family, or the same color tone, you will give the room a sense of feeling serene. A feeling of balance is good, too, when it comes to painting the blocks on the wall. When everything’s finished, the room should feel more inviting and give the people who enter the room a feeling of relaxation.
When you paint the blocks with brighter hues of colors, it will give the room a bold look. A lighter painted room will give the feeling of calm and relaxation. Also, dark colors tend to make a room look smaller, whereas lighter colors make a room look bigger.
To get started with using color blocking in a room’s design, draw various sizes of blocks and rectangles on a sheet of paper. Lay the blocks in a geometric design so that the colors, sizes, and positions of the blocks are arranged in a balanced order. When the design has been finalized in your mind, and on paper, then trace the blocks onto the wall by gently outlining each block in pencil. If you want, you can use painter’s tape to create the blocks and then you will paint inside the tape. Don’t use masking tape since it will be difficult to remove from the wall. Painter’s tape is easy to remove from the wall after you’ve painted the blocks.
Once the blocks are in place with the painter’s tape, then you can begin painting. When the paint is dry, remove the tape.
