The Crop Trend Takes Off For Spring/Summer

The Spring collections seem to be sending a clear message to women everywhere. Start the hitting the gym! Much like the cut-out trend from earlier seasons and the current sheer trend, the crop top trend takes its cues from ladies with toned bodies and midriffs.

Designers such as BCBG Max Azria, Alberta Ferretti, House Of Holland, Balenciaga and Alexander Wang all showed belly button baring designs in their Spring runway shows. Whether the crop tops were paired with flouncey skirts or dressy pants, they instilled an air of vibrancy and youth to the collections.

This trend is definitely slanted for those women that have trim waistlines and want to show them off. A perfect look for Spring and Summer, this style direction provides a bit of relief from those stifling hot days where too many layers or enclosed and constricting clothing can make you feel like your encased in plastic! The styling tends to be loose-fitting and the fabrications are usually made of breathable fabrics that make this a comfortable trend to wear.

My favorite versions of this look are a cropped woven or knit top that is paired with a flirty skirt or a pair of boyfriend jeans or Capri pants. This look incorporates some of the casual normcore trend that became popular this year. I’m not a big fan of the bustier as it is a bit too revealing and unforgiving for those women with less than perfect bodies. It also is not a professional look that can be worn to the office.

Last year, Kerry Washington, who was expecting her first child, wore a crop top ensemble by Prada to the Screen Actors Guild awards, challenging the notion that this look is only for women with super-model figures! I also like the option of wearing a cropped top over another top. This layering version provides even more choices to create a unique look by mixing fabrics, colors and patterns of differing lengths.

This chic separates look allows for a plethora of cool combinations. The color blocked trend is well represented here and there is no shortage of mix-and-match print and pattern styling couplings that can be imagined. This trend seems to have legs and looks primed to reappear next year so women still have time to get in shape!

What about you? Do you plan on wearing some cool crop top looks as part of your Spring and Summer ensembles?
